Kein historischer Prachtbau oder moderner Museumstempel. Sondern ein ehemaliger Stall und Stadel, in dem vor gut 200 Jahren ein gewisser Andreas Hofer seine Pferde fütterte und ausmistete.

Non un prestigioso edificio storico né un moderno tempio museale. Bensì un ex stalla con fienile nella quale buoni 200 anni fa un certo Andreas Hofer foraggiava i suoi cavalli e ne ripuliva il letame.

Not some magnificent historical building or modern museum temple, but a former stable and barn where, 200 years ago, a certain Andreas Hofer fed and mucked out his horses.

 


  • Der Sandhof.     Geburts- und Wohnort von Andreas Hofer (1767-1810). Sein heutiges Aussehen dürfte der Sandhof im 17. Jahrhundert bekommen haben, als der Hof in den Besitz der Familie Hofer kam. Teile des Mauerwerks im Keller stammen aus dem 13. Jahrhundert. Im Mittelalter war der Sandhof als „Auflegerhof“ bekannt. Denn hier war Endstation für die aus Meran kommenden Fuhrwerke. Saumtiere und Träger übernahmen am Sandhof die Waren und schleppten sie über den Jaufenpass nach Sterzing. Auch Andreas Hofer war noch im Saumgeschäft tätig. Zu seiner Zeit war der Sandhof das bekannteste Gasthaus im ganzen Tal und hieß „Wirtshaus zur goldenen Krone“. Der Name Sandhof rührt von den Überschwemmungen der nahen Passer her. Der Wildbach verwüstete oft den Talboden und hinterließ dann große Mengen an Sand und Schotter. So auch 1774, als der Kummersee unterhalb des Timmelsjochs ausbrach und sogar noch in Meran zahlreiche Häuser und fast alle Brücken zerstörte. Als Andreas Hofer starb, war der Sandhof schwer verschuldet. Seine Witwe Anna konnte jedoch mit Hilfe einiger Gläubiger den Besitz retten. 1838, zwei Jahre nach ihrem Tod, kaufte Kaiser Ferdinand I. das Anwesen. Bereits um diese Zeit wurde der Sandhof für Reisende zu einer Sehenswürdigkeit. Die unzähligen Gästebücher, die es seitdem gibt, enthalten illustre Namen. Der ranghöchste Gast war Kaiser Franz Joseph I. Sein Besuch 1899 anlässlich der 90-Jahr-Feiern des Tiroler Aufstandes wurde zum bislang größten Volksfest in Passeier. Dabei wurde die Andreas Hofer-Gedächtniskapelle eingeweiht. Sie steht unmittelbar neben dem heutigen Freigelände und enthält einen Bilderzyklus aus dem Leben Hofers. Seit 1982 steht der Sandhof unter Denkmalschutz.

    Il Sandhof. Qui nacque e visse Andreas Hofer (1767-1810). La struttura odierna del Sandhof risale probabilmente al XVII secolo, quando il maso divenne proprietà della famiglia Hofer. Alcune parti delle murature della cantina risalgono al XIII secolo. Nel Medioevo il Sandhof era noto come "Auflegerhof" perché era lì che terminava il viaggio dei carri provenienti da Merano. Al maso i portatori con i loro animali da soma prendevano in consegna le merci e le trasportavano a Vipiteno attraverso il Passo Giovo. Anche Andreas Hofer si dedicava al trasporto di merci. All'epoca il Sandhof era la locanda più nota dell'intera valle e si chiamava "Wirtshaus zur goldenen Krone". L'origine del nome Sandhof è legata alle esondazioni del vicino Passirio. Questo torrente di montagna devastava spesso il fondovalle lasciando dietro di sé grandi quantità di sabbia (in tedesco Sand) e ciottoli, come avvenne nel 1774, quando il Kummersee, il lago ai piedi del Passo del Rombo, tracimò distruggendo molte case e quasi tutti i ponti persino a Merano. Alla morte di Andreas Hofer il Sandhof era gravato da molti debiti; la vedova Anna Hofer poté tuttavia salvare la proprietà con l'aiuto di alcuni creditori. Nel 1838, due anni dopo la morte della vedova di Hofer, l'imperatore Ferdinando I acquistò il maso. Già in quel periodo il Sandhof era un'attrazione per i viaggiatori. I numerosi libri dei visitatori, che da allora registrano gli ospiti del maso, contengono nomi illustri. L'ospite più importante fu l'imperatore Francesco Giuseppe I; la sua visita nel 1899 in occasione del novantesimo anniversario della rivolta tirolese fu la più grande festa popolare della Val Passiria. In quell'occasione fu inaugurata la cappella commemorativa di Andreas Hofer, che oggi si trova accanto all'area all'aperto e contiene un ciclo di immagini tratte dalla vita di Hofer. Dal 1982 il Sandhof è sottoposto a vincolo di tutela storico-artistica.

    The Sandhof. The place where Andreas Hofer (1767-1810) was born and lived. Its current appearance dates back to the 17th century, when the inn came into the possession of the Hofer family. Parts of the cellar walls date from the 13th century. In the Middle Ages the Sandhof was known as the “Auflegerhof”, the last stopping place for wagons coming up from Meran. From this point on pack animals and porters would take goods over the Jaufenpass to Sterzing. Andreas Hofer too was active in the pack-animal business. At his time the Sandhof was the best-known inn in the entire valley and was known as the “Golden Crown”. The name Sandhof comes from the floods caused by the nearby River Passer. The torrent often devastated the valley floor, leaving behind large quantities of sand and gravel; for example in 1774, when the Kummersee Lake below the Timmelsjoch Pass burst its banks, destroying many houses and nearly every bridge as far away as Meran. When Andreas Hofer died, the Sandhof was heavily in debt. However, with the help of certain creditors, his widow Anna managed to retain possession. In 1838, two years after her death, the Emperor Ferdinand I bought the Sandhof, which had already become a tourist attraction. The innumerable guest books filled since then contain many illustrious names: the highest-ranking guest was the Emperor Francis Joseph I, whose visit in 1899 on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the Tyrolean rebellion then turned into the largest ever folk festival in the Passeier Valley. The Andreas Hofer memorial chapel was consecrated on that occasion; it stands directly next to today’s open-air exhibition and contains a picture cycle from the life of Hofer. Since 1982 the Sandhof has had the status of a protected monument.


  • Die Geschichte des Museums.     Bereits Anna Hofer (1765–1836) zeigte im Sandwirtshaus die Kleider und Gebrauchsgegenstände ihres verstorbenen Mannes. Die ersten Besucher*innen dieser Stube waren in den 1825er Jahren vorwiegend Engländer, die den Aufstand der Tiroler gegen Napoleon naturgemäß bewundert hatten. 1838 wurde der Sandhof kaiserliches Lehen und in den folgenden Jahren das Gasthaus systematisch zur patriotischen Pilgerstätte ausgebaut. 1975 entstand dann in einem engen Raum im Stall des Wirtschaftsgebäudes ein „Andreas Hofer Gedenkraum“. Parallel sammelte seit Ende der 1960er Jahre in St. Martin eine Gruppe von heimatkundlich interessierten Menschen bäuerliche und handwerkliche Kleingegenstände. Ihr Wunsch, am Sandhof ein Passeirer Heimatmuseum zu errichten, scheiterte und so entstand 1981 das „Heimatmuseum St. Martin“ im Untergeschoss der örtlichen Raiffeisenkassa. In den 1990er Jahren wurde klar: Sowohl der modrige Hofersche Gedenkraum am Sandhof als auch das Heimatmuseum St. Martin waren nicht mehr zeitgemäß.
    Die Matrikelstiftung als Eigentümerin des Sandhofs, der Verein Heimatmuseum St. Martin und die drei Passeirer Gemeinden unter der Führung von St. Leonhard erklärten sich nun bereit, gemeinsam am Sandhof das MuseumPasseier mit den Schwerpunkten Andreas Hofer und Volkskunde zu verwirklichen. 1995 gründeten obgenannte Institutionen den Verein „Andreas Hofer Talmuseum – Sandhof“ und Harald Haller entwarf das Konzept, um diese beiden Museen im Stadel des Sandhofs zu vereinen. 1998 führte der Verein sein erstes größeres Projekt aus. Ein historisches Bauernhaus, eine Scheune, eine Mühle und ein Kornkasten, an anderen Stellen in Passeier vom Abbruch gedroht, wurden vorsichtig zerlegt und am Sandhof wieder aufgebaut: Der Beginn des heutigen Freigeländes. 2000 folgte ein kleiner Museumsraum auf der Pfistradalm, gleichzeitig wurde das Wirtschaftsgebäude des Sandhofes nach den Plänen des Architektenehepaares Nussbaumer & Nussbaumer aus Innsbruck umgebaut und 2001 als MuseumPasseier geöffnet bzw. am 18. Mai 2002 offiziell übergeben: Im Erdgeschoß wurde eine Ausstellung mit Objekten zu Andreas Hofer eingerichtet, auch entstand ein Trickfilm über Hofers Leben und seine Rolle beim Tiroler Aufstand von 1809. Im Obergeschoß fand eine Abteilung für Volkskunde ihren Platz. 2003 wurde in der Jaufenburg eine Außenstelle des Museums eingerichtet. Für das Gedenkjahr 2009 wurde das Museum um einen unterirdischen, 500 m2 großen Zubau erweitert. Mit Helden & Hofer erhielt der Andreas Hofer-Teil des Museums ein völlig neues Konzept. Ebenfalls 2009 entstand das Bunker Mooseum in Moos. 2013 wurde im Obergeschoß die neue Dauerausstellung Helden & Wir eingerichtet, die thematische Ergänzung zu Helden & Hofer. Die bis dahin im Obergeschoß untergebrachte Volkskunde-Abteilung wurde 2015 zur Dauerausstellung "Mier Psairer" und einem Schaudepot in einem Gebäude auf dem Freigelände umgestaltet.

    La storia del MuseoPassiria. L'associazione "Andreas Hofer Talmuseum Sandhof", fondata nel 1995, ha l'obiettivo di trasformare in un museo al passo con i tempi uno spazio dedicato ad Andreas Hofer già esistente da molti anni al Sandhof. Questo museo di Andreas Hofer vuole essere al contempo un museo della valle, che raccolga gli oggetti della vita contadina degli abitanti della Val Passiria. Membri dell'associazione sono i Comuni di San Martino in Passiria, San Leonardo in Passiria e Moso, l'associazione "Heimatmuseum St. Martin" e la Tiroler Matrikelstiftung, alla quale appartiene il Sandhof.
    Nel 1998 l'Associazione del Museo realizzò il suo primo grande progetto. Un maso storico, un fienile, un mulino e un granaio a rischio di demolizione in diverse località della Val Passiria sono stati smontati con perizia e accuratamente ricostruiti al Sandhof. È così che ha preso vita l'area all'aperto del museo.
    Nel 2000 è stata realizzata una piccola area museale nella [Malga Pfistrad]. Contemporaneamente è stato ristrutturato il fabbricato rurale del Sandhof, inaugurato nel 2001 come MuseoPassiria. Al piano terra è stata allestita una mostra con oggetti di Andreas Hofer ed è stato inoltre realizzato un film d'animazione sulla vita di Hofer e sul suo ruolo durante la rivolta tirolese del 1809. Al piano superiore ha invece trovato posto una sezione dedicata ad usi e costumi locali. Nel 2003 è stata allestita una sede esterna del museo a Castel Giovo.
    Per l'anno commemorativo 2009 il museo è stato ampliato con la realizzazione di ambienti sotterranei per 500 metri quadrati. Con il percorso "Eroi & Hofer" la sezione del museo dedicata ad Andreas Hofer è stata riorganizzata in base ad una concezione completamente nuova. Sempre nel 2009 è nato il Bunker Mooseum a Moso. Nel 2013 è stata allestita al piano superiore la nuova mostra permanente "Eroi & Noi", che dal punto di vista tematico completa la mostra "Eroi & Hofer". La sezione dedicata agli usi e costumi locali, che fino a quel momento si trovava al piano superiore, è stata riorganizzata nel 2015 in forma di mostra permanente in un edificio apposito situato nell'area all'aperto.

    History of the Museum. The “Andreas Hofer Talmuseum Sandhof” Museum Association, formed in 1995, set itself the aim of replacing the Hofer memorial room, a feature of the Sandhof Inn for many years, with a museum with a contemporary orientation.
    This Hofer museum was equally intended as a museum for the valley, with a collection of items depicting the life of the Passeier’s rural communities.
    Association members include the municipalities of St. Martin, St. Leonhard and Moos, the “Heimatmuseum St. Martin” Association as well as the Tiroler Matrikelstiftung as an owner of the Sandhof.
    In 1998 the Museum Association implemented its first major project. A historical farmhouse, a barn, a mill and a grain storage structure, located at other places in the valley and on the point of collapse, were carefully dismantled and reassembled at the Sandhof, marking the beginning of today’s open-air exhibition.
    In 2000 a small museum area was opened on the Pfistradalm.
    At the same time the Sandhof Inn was rebuilt and opened in 2001 as the MuseumPasseier.
    The ground floor housed an exhibition with items related to Andreas Hofer. There was also an animated film about Hofer’s life and his role in the Tyrolean rebellion of 1809. The upper floor was home to a section dedicated to ethnography (folk traditions).
    In 2003 a branch of the Museum was opened at the Jaufenburg.
    For the anniversary year of 2009, the Museum was expanded with the construction of a 500 m2 underground area. The “Heroes & Hofer” exhibition meant a completely new concept for the part of the Museum dealing with Andreas Hofer. The year 2009 also saw the opening of the [Bunker Mooseum] in Moos.
    In 2013 a new permanent exhibition, Heroes & Us – a thematic extension of Heroes & Hofer – was opened on the upper floor. The exhibition of folk traditions, previously accommodated on the upper floor, from 2015 is presented in the permanent exhibition "Mier Psairer" in a building in the open-air section.

Ihre Ursprünge reichen bis in die Regierungszeit der Landesfürstin Margarete von Tirol (1318–1369) zurück. 1890 kaufte die Tiroler Adels-Matrikel-Genossenschaft, wie sie damals hieß, das hochverschuldete Sandhofsgut. Und war unter der Führung der Grafen Karl Friedrich von Pfeil, Johannes von Firmian und Ulrich von Toggenburg maßgeblich daran beteiligt, dass in den 1990er-Jahren am Sandhof das MuseumPasseier entstehen konnte. Heute vertreten Graf Ulrich Mamming und Graf Michael Pfeil die Matrikelstiftung im Museumsverein.

    La Tiroler Matrikelstiftung. Un’associazione di famiglie nobiliari del Tirolo storico (il Land austriaco del Tirolo con il Tirolo orientale e le attuali Province Autonome di Bolzano e Trento). Le origini di quest’associazione risalgono all’epoca del governo della principessa territoriale Margherita di Tirolo-Gorizia (1318–1369). Nel 1890 la Tiroler Adels-Matrikel-Genossenschaft, come si chiamava all’epoca, acquistò il maso Sandhof pesantemente indebitato. Sotto la guida dei conti Karl Friedrich von Pfeil, Johannes von Firmian e Ulrich von Toggenburg ha avuto un ruolo decisivo negli anni Novanta del Novecento per la nascita del MuseoPassiria. Oggi i conti Ulrich Mamming e Michael Pfeil rappresentano la Matrikelstiftung all’interno dell’associazione museale.

    The Tiroler Matrikelstiftung. An association of noble families from Old Tyrol (the Austrian province of Tyrol that included East Tyrol as well as the present-day provinces of Bozen and Trento). Its origins date back to the reign of Princess Margarete of Tyrol (1318-1369). In 1890, the Tiroler Adels-Matrikel-Genossenschaft, as it was then called, bought the highly indebted Sandhof estate: under the leadership of Counts Karl Friedrich von Pfeil, Johannes von Firmian and Ulrich von Toggenburg, it was instrumental in establishing the MuseumPasseier at the Sandhof in the 1990s. Ulrich, Count Mamming and Michael, Count Pfeil today represent the Matrikelstiftung in the Museum Association.

Annelies Gufler

Schusterin mit Meisterprüfung. Arbeitet seit 2022 nicht nur am Empfang und als Vermittlerin, sondern ist verantwortlich für unseren Museumsshop, nimmt beim Inventarisieren unsere Volkskundeobjekte genauer unter die Lupe und bringt neuen Schwung in unsere Vorführungen von altem Handwerk wie Woll-, Leder- und Getreideverarbeitung.

  • Maestra artigiana di calzoleria. Dal 2022 non solo lavora con noi all’accoglienza e come mediatrice, ma gestisce anche lo shop museale. Punta il suo sguardo penetrante sugli oggetti folkloristici del museo mentre li inventaria e infonde nuovo entusiasmo nelle dimostrazioni dedicate agli antichi lavori artigianali, come la lavorazione della lana, della pelle e dei cereali.

    A qualified master shoemaker, since 2022 she has not only been working at reception and as a facilitator, but is also responsible for our museum shop, as well as investigating our folkloric objects and bringing new energy to our demonstrations of old handicrafts, such as wool, leather and grain processing.

Claudia Ilmer

Seit 2021 die Erste im Haus, und das meist ab halb 6 Uhr morgens. Rückt von März bis Oktober dem Museumsstaub auf die Pelle und sorgt für glänzende Vitrinen.


  • Dal 2021 è la prima ad arrivare, spesso già alle cinque e mezza del mattino. Da marzo a ottobre libera il museo dalla polvere e si preoccupa che le vetrine siano lucenti.

    Since 2021 she has been the first into the building, usually from 5:30 in the morning. From March to October she dusts the museum from top to bottom and makes sure the display cases are gleaming.

Heidi Pixner

Als geborene Pragmatikerin, gelernte Buchhalterin und ehemalige Gastwirtin sehr flott mit Zahlen und Zahlungen. Seit 2008 im Museum, ab 2011 hauptberuflich: Für Empfang, Vermittlung, Organisation, Buchhaltung und mehr.

    A born pragmatist, trained accountant and former innkeeper, she knows all about numbers and payments. She has been at the museum since 2008, from 2011 working full-time: on reception, communication, organisation, bookkeeping and more besides.

  • Stark, stärker, Christl. Knetet an unseren Brotbacktagen 60 Minuten lang 80 Kilo Brotteig im Zuber und ackert auch in ihrer Freizeit: In ihrem eigenen Acker mit alten Getreide- und Gemüsesorten.

    Forzuta, forzutissima, Christl. Nelle giornate dedicate alla panificazione impasta per 60 minuti buoni 80 chilogrammi d’impasto nel mastello e nel tempo libero ara il suo campo nel quale coltiva granaglie e ortaggi antichi.

    Strong, stronger, Christl: on bread-baking days she will knead 80 kilos of bread dough in a vat for 60 minutes and also works in her free time, growing old varieties of grain and vegetables in her field.

  • Oder Dommi, wie der hauptberufliche Jugendtreffmitarbeiter meist genannt wird. Begann 2017 in der Museumsvermittlung und ist mittlerweile auch Kulturreferent der Gemeinde St. Martin und Vorstandsmitglied im Museumsverein. Ist uns – trotz immer knapper werdender Freizeit – als Vermittler treu geblieben.

    Detto anche Dommi, come viene chiamato di solito il collaboratore professionale del centro giovanile. Ha iniziato nel 2017 come mediatore museale e nel frattempo è diventato referente per la cultura del Comune di San Martino e membro del Consiglio direttivo dell’associazione museale. Nonostante abbia sempre meno tempo libero, rimane fedele al museo come mediatore.

    AKA Dommi, as the full-time youth centre worker is usually called. He started working in museum education in 2017 and is now also cultural advisor to the municipality of St. Martin and on the board of the museum association. Despite ever-increasing demands on his free time, he has remained loyal to us as a communicator.

  • Der Speedy Gonzales unter den ehemaligen Praktikanten, der nach seinem Sommerjob bei uns immer noch für den guten Ton unserer Audiofiles zuständig ist. Unterschreibt gern mit Rieferbue oder Student aus Salzburg und philosophiert mit Vorliebe über die Ästhetik unserer Objekte.

    Lo Speedy Gonzales tra gli ex praticanti che, anche dopo aver concluso il suo lavoro estivo al museo, si preoccupa ancora del buon funzionamento dei nostri audio. Preferisce firmarsi “studente di Salisburgo” e ama filosofeggiare sull’estetica dei nostri oggetti.

    The Speedy Gonzales of our former interns who, after his summer job with us, is still responsible for the good quality sound of our audio files. He prefers to sign himself as “Student from Salzburg” and likes to philosophise about the aesthetics of our objects.

  • Immer gut gelaunt, meist unterwegs, selten leise. Hatte 17 Jahre am Museumsempfang für alle Sorgen der Besucher*innen ein offenes Ohr. Nun springt sie ein, falls Stricke reißen, Mottenalarm herrscht, Brot gebacken wird.

    Sempre di buon umore, spesso in giro, raramente taciturna. Per 17 anni ha prestato ascolto alle richieste dei visitatori e delle visitatrici alla nostra cassa. Ora viene ad aiutarci quando non sappiamo più che pesci pigliare, quando scoppia l’allarme tarme o quando facciamo il pane.

    Constantly in a good mood, usually on the go, rarely quiet. She worked for 17 years on our reception, always with an open ear for the concerns of our visitors. Now she steps in should a cord break, moths become a problem or bread is to be baked.

  • Als Kind spielte sie auf der Jaufenburg Archäologin, heute betreut sie die Ruine als unsere Außenstelle. Sie ist leidenschaftliche Bäuerin und Kulturreferentin von St. Leonhard. Von 2016 bis 2022 kümmerte sie sich während der Saison um Empfang, Vermittlung und Shop im Museum, seit 2023 ist sie unser Joker bei Führungen und übernimmt Projekte im Freilichtbereich.

    Da bambina giocava a fare l’archeologa a Castel Giovo, oggi gestisce la rovina quale sede distaccata del museo. Dal 2016 al 2022, durante la stagione di apertura, si è occupata dell’accoglienza, della mediazione e dello shop museale. Da quando, oltre a coltivare la vocazione di contadina appassionata, è diventata referente per la cultura di San Leonardo, ci coadiuva nei progetti nell’area all’aperto ed è il nostro jolly per le visite guidate.

    As a child she played at being an archaeologist on the Jaufenburg: today she looks after its ruins that form our outpost. Er ist nicht nur Tabletopper, sondern auch unser Trumpf im Ärmel, wenn die Medien mal wieder die Kombination Hofernachfahre und Historiker suchen.

    Ha iniziato nel 2008 come praticante, per studiare le 600 pagine del libro sull’insurrezione hoferiana di Josef Hirn. Nel frattempo è diventato insegnante di storia e solo raramente sente ancora il suo soprannome "Hirn" (cervello). È il nostro asso nella manica quando i media sono ancora una volta a caccia di qualcuno che sia la combinazione di discendente di Hofer e storico.

    Started as a trainee in 2008 to study 600 pages of a book by Josef Hirn on the Hofer Uprising: now a history teacher who rarely hears his nickname “Hirn (brain)”. He is also our trump card when the media are looking for a combination of Hofer descendant and historian.
